Unlocking the Power of Connection

At Nicolas Valley Elementary, educators gathered for a professional development workshop that wasn’t just a presentation—it was a transformative experience. John Broussard’s keynote, Unlocking Empathy, addressed the challenges of connecting with students who face trauma and adapting to changing demographics. With his signature blend of empathy-driven education, John provided tools and insights for building inclusive, supportive environments where every student feels seen, valued, and understood.

Throughout the session, educators were reminded of their “why”—the reason they chose this profession. As Debbie, a SPED teacher, reflected, the workshop was “a great reminder of my ‘why,’” while Emily, a kindergarten teacher, felt inspired to pursue home visits to better understand her students’ stories. Such connections, as John emphasized, are the foundation of meaningful education.

The workshop’s impact resonated on a personal level for many. Christopher, a physical education teacher, shared how John’s message “hit home with my own past trauma as a child and father,” and Annalisa, a fifth-grade teacher, expressed gratitude for the vulnerability and trust John showed, stating, “You had me at the first poem. Thank you for trusting us with your experiences.”

John’s dedication to equity and connection in the classroom reminded educators like Brittany, a school psychologist, of the importance of supporting students and families experiencing trauma: “As our principal mentioned, our demographic is changing. We need to be reminded of our ‘why’ and receive these resources to help our staff.”

This workshop wasn’t about theories—it was about actionable strategies and heart-led teaching that drive change. By focusing on empathy and emotional connection, educators walked away empowered to create an environment where students can thrive and teachers can reconnect with their purpose. As Sarah, a fourth-grade teacher, beautifully put it, “If my students feel safe and excited about being in my classroom… I can teach them anything.”
