Unlocking Empathy. Fueling School Culture and Equity from the Inside Out

At Excellence Through Education Conference, hosted by the Riverside County Office of Education, John Broussard led a powerful workshop titled “Unlocking Empathy. Fueling School Culture and Equity from the Inside Out.” The session invited educators to explore empathy not just as a concept, but as an active practice that shapes how they connect, teach, and lead.

An Experiential Approach to Connection

Blending storytelling, poetry, and interactive reflection, John created a space where educators could reconnect with the heart of their work. Through his poems and guided experiences, participants explored the emotions behind human connection and what it means to show up, take risks, and trust others in moments of uncertainty.

Each experience was designed to help educators recognize their own emotional responses and understand how those same feelings often surface in the students they serve. The session reminded participants that awareness, compassion, and presence are the building blocks of authentic relationships.

Trust, Reflection, and Emotional Readiness

In a moment of shared vulnerability, John invited educators to reflect on their sense of trust and openness, both personally and professionally. He encouraged them to consider their Emotional Readiness (ER) Score, asking how often they pause to assess their capacity for empathy, patience, and connection.

These reflections highlighted that equity begins from within. Understanding our own emotional landscape allows us to create environments where every student feels seen, valued, and supported.

A Message That Resonates

John’s message reminded everyone that empathy is not an initiative but a daily practice that transforms relationships and restores purpose. His blend of inspiration, poetry, and practical reflection left attendees empowered to lead with heart and authenticity.

At Connected3030, we believe that when educators strengthen their emotional connection to the work, they build schools where students and staff thrive together.
